The training courses for ambulance drivers are geared towards the needs of each department and are designed to teach students to safely operate an emergency vehicle and understand the long term effects of an accident on themselves, the emergency service organization, and the community. The courses are a combination of classroom and practical work in the field with the student learning how to operate both the vehicle and its various equipment, including radios, fire alarms, emergency lights, and sirens.
The course also covers emergency driving maneuvers including turning and negotiating intersections, backing the ambulance up to a curb, and reversing into parking spaces. In addition to this, the course covers driving laws and teaches students about risk factors for ambulance accidents. It also provides the student with the knowledge of emergency services procedures and how to effectively communicate with other emergency personnel on the scene.
Students are taught how to handle a hose and fire pump in a safe manner and are required to perform a practical demonstration of their ability to do so. During the demonstration, the student must also demonstrate their ability to safely operate an ambulance and drive through a 150 foot alley. The trainee must demonstrate that he or she can recover control of the vehicle if it gets too close to one side of the alley when reversing into a position.
Aside from the training program, a new driver must be physically examined by a doctor and submit to random drug testing in accordance with the Office of Pupil Transportation’s drug and alcohol policy. The new driver must also provide a negative result from a tuberculosis skin test or QFT blood sample, and a chest x-ray showing that the TB infection is latent and not contagious, or making the individual sick. The driver must also pass a background check and psychological examination before being hired.
