Recessed Emergency Driver

Recessed emergency driver are an important component of emergency lighting systems in commercial and public buildings. They supply regulated backup power to LED light fixtures when the mains electricity fails, keeping occupants and emergency personnel safe. Most national and local codes require building owners to install and maintain emergency lighting backup systems, including recessed emergency drivers.

In most cases, recessed emergency drivers are wired to the existing driver in an LED fixture. They bypass the mains power during normal operation to keep the fixture powered from the battery, but they connect directly to the LED array when in emergency mode to provide high-voltage output. The driver also typically connects to the 0-10V dimming circuit in an LED fixture if the fixture is dimmable. This allows the emergency driver to control the light’s output during normal and emergency operations.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Emergency lighting drivers help maximize energy efficiency in LED fixtures by intelligently regulating their power output and battery usage. This helps minimize energy consumption during backup power operation and extends the lifespan of both the driver and LED fixture.

ADAPTABILITY

Emergency backup drivers for LED lights are available in a wide range of sizes and wattages to fit a broad range of fixtures. They can be installed in drywall ceilings, grid ceilings, and walls using an appropriate kit. For a more discreet appearance, they can be hidden inside a trim ring or small aperture.

VERSATILITY

Many emergency backup drivers include a test switch that can be manually activated to perform regular testing of the system. This ensures that the driver is functioning properly and that all fixtures are illuminated during a power outage. Some drivers can even be programmed to automatically conduct these tests at predetermined intervals.

SPECIFICATIONS

When selecting an emergency backup driver, it’s essential to match the input voltage of the driver with the output voltage of the LED fixture. You’ll also want to make sure that the driver has a UL listing, is compatible with the fixture’s dimmer type (if applicable), and offers enough wattage to adequately power the light in emergency mode.

Emergency lighting backup systems are required in most commercial and public buildings to provide adequate illumination for occupants to safely navigate the facility during power outages. The most common requirement is to have a system that can maintain lighting for at least 90 minutes during an outage. In addition to ensuring that emergency lights are capable of maintaining their output during an outage, it’s important for facilities to have the proper documentation and maintenance protocols in place.
