How to Select a Led Battery Backup Driver
A led battery backup driver provides regulated backup power to LED light fixtures so that they can continue operating during a power outage. These drivers are designed to monitor the power line for disruptions, and when a failure is detected they transfer power from the main driver to the battery. They are usually installed alongside the normal LED driver and will operate in tandem so that your facility can continue to illuminate egress routes in emergency situations. These backup drivers will run for at least 90 minutes when fully charged.
LED battery backup drivers are available in a wide variety of voltage ranges to accommodate many different fixture types. They are typically used in new or existing LED lights and can be easily installed by accessing the existing driver on the fixture. They can be wired to either AC or DC input voltages and will work with either AC ballasts or LED light engines. Most of these drivers also feature a 0-10V dimming circuit that allows them to control LED fixtures with 0-10V controllers.
It is important to match the output voltage range of the backup LED driver with the output voltage requirements of the fixture you are installing it in. You can usually find this information on a label that is located near or on the existing LED fixture driver.
Another key consideration is the duration of backup power that you need for your lighting system. Most of these drivers are rated to provide backup power for a minimum of 90 minutes, which is the standard requirement for code compliance in most jurisdictions. Some also have a status indicator that lets you know whether the battery is charging or depleted.
Finally, you will need to consider the environmental needs of your facility when selecting a battery backup LED driver. Some drivers are rated to operate in wet environments, while others may be more appropriate for dry or dusty facilities. You will also need to ensure that your chosen backup driver meets UL and IP ratings for your specific environment. For instance, if your facility has high moisture levels you will want to select an IP68-rated LED emergency driver that is protected against liquid and solid debris.
